Bonxie Birds, The Noup of Noss

Bonxie, for the Great Skua, derives from the Old Norse 'bunki', whence Shetland 'bunksi', a word for 'a dumpy, untidy, or heavily dressed person (often a woman).

There is also an Ulster Scots usage, 'gabshite', for the same bird.
