On Not Translating

We swam a river from opposite banks,
met halfway and kept going.
There was no awkwardness.
We did not have words.

Reminds me of a story told by William Golding about the time he noticed Einstein standing next to him on Magdalen Bridge in Oxford. They were both peering into the river. 'Fisch', said Golding. 'Ja, Fisch', said Einstein. And having no more words in common, the Nobel Laureates went their separate ways.
