    Also, there was an amazing exhibition on Ellis Island, NY, of the immigration processing centre before it was museumised in the 90s.

    I think it was Brodsky (in some interview or other) who referred to ruins as the most persistent form of architecture (or words to that effect).

    Ruins and art (photography/painting) were made for each other. I've often stopped the car to check out an abandoned house, such as the following:
